Yuvraj Singh in talks with Delhi Capitals to join coaching staff ahead of IPL 2025: Report
New Delhi: Delhi Capitals are reportedly in talks with former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh for a coaching staff role ahead of the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League. The development comes after reports surfaced that 2022 champions Gujarat Titans wanted a two-time World Cup winner in their coaching staff. Delhi Capitals parted ways with head coach Ricky Ponting in June.
Although Yuvraj has no experience as a team coach, he has mentored players like Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma. After Ponting's departure, Sourav Ganguly is reportedly set to take charge of the senior team as head coach. However, questions remain as to what position Yuvraj will be given if he joins the board. With Ganguly as the head coach, Yuvraj can fill the role of mentor.
Based on a Sportstar report, Delhi Capitals are keen to bring Yuvraj on board. The franchise, since its inception in 2008, has not won a single IPL. They finished sixth in IPL 2024 and failed to qualify for the playoffs in any of the last three seasons. Notably, Yuvraj played for Delhi Capitals (then Delhi Daredevils) in 2015 when he was bought for Rs 16 crore – the highest bid for any player at the time.
Led by JP Duminy, Delhi finished seventh in the eight-team tournament in 2015. Yuvraj Singh scored 248 runs in 14 matches, including two fifties.
As for Ponting, the Australian joined Delhi Capitals in 2018. They finished bottom of the table in Ponting's first year as coach before making a strong comeback from 2019 to 2021 where the team qualified for the playoffs for three consecutive years. Also played the final in 2020 under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer.
