World's worst animal abuser zoologist Adam Britton faces maximum sentence for raping and killing more than 60 dogs
The final hearing in the animal cruelty case against British crocodile expert Adam Britton was postponed on Thursday after his lawyer presented a new report to the bench.
The final hearing in the animal cruelty case involving British crocodile expert zoologist Adam Britton was adjourned on July 11 after his lawyer presented a new report to the judge. The next hearing will be held in August. Britton was accused of torturing, raping and killing several dogs. He faces a maximum prison sentence of 249 years in Australia. In 2023, a British zoologist found him guilty of more than 60 counts of animal cruelty.
A bench led by NT Supreme Court Justice Michael Grant asked staff and animal rights activists to leave the room ahead of the hearing.
“In my assessment, the material has the potential to cause nervous shock or some other psychological disturbance,” he was quoted as saying by ABC. The judge called the offending “grotesque cruelty to animals”.
Before the final verdict, the man's lawyer presented a new piece of evidence and asked the judge to consider it. The evidence detailed his mental state after nearly thirty hours of counseling sessions with a psychologist while in custody.
“Remorse, like insight, is considered evidence of the potential for rehabilitation. Those are things that might not be present the first time someone speaks in a professional capacity. Those are things that often develop with treatment. They are not set in stone,” says Britain's lawyer.
The lawyer pleaded for a lighter sentence for his client, emphasizing the hardship his client has been facing since the early days due to a condition. The legal representative highlighted that the condition is stigmatized in many communities, adding to the person's struggles as they transition into adulthood.
The Briton, who has been dubbed 'the world's worst animal abuser', broke down in tears in court before the sentence was announced.
ABC's report revealed a disturbing account of him, known for maliciously harming and killing dogs in Darwin, Australia. Shockingly, he even recorded these brutal acts. Britton maintained what could be referred to as a “torture chamber”, essentially a shipping container, where he not only mistreated the dogs but also sexually assaulted them.
