The West Bengal state government has sought a report from the Chief Minister on Bangladesh's comments
West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has sought a report from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over her remarks about “sheltering” helpless people in violence-hit Bangladesh, the Raj Bhavan said on Monday.
In a post on X, the Raj Bhavan Media Cell said it is the Centre's prerogative to handle anything that is part of external affairs.
“It is within the power of the central government to accommodate people from abroad. The Chief Minister's public statement accepting the responsibility of providing shelter to people coming from abroad indicates a constitutional violation of the gravest nature,” it said.
“In the above circumstances, the HG (Governor) has called upon the Chief Minister to submit a comprehensive report under Article 167 of the Constitution, on the basis of which such public announcement has been made in defiance of constitutional justifications; Whether any action is being taken in this direction without obtaining necessary consent from the Government of India; And what action is taken to see that the type of migration expected in the country does not affect the standard of living in the border areas in Bengal and does not affect the demographic balance of the state,” he added.
