Vinesh is the champion regardless of the CAS verdict, says Singhania, the wrestler's lawyer
The CAS verdict on Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat's appeal for a silver medal from the Paris Olympics 2024 will be announced at 9.30 pm IST.
Wrestler Vinesh Phogat's lawyer Vidushpat Singhania said the Indian wrestler is a champion regardless of how the Court of Arbitration in Sport (CAS) rules in her fight for a Paris Olympics 2024 medal. Phogat, who was disqualified from the finals of the Paris Olympics for being slightly over the weight limit, announced his retirement from wrestling following the incident. She defeated Cuba's Yusnelis Guzman Lopez 5-0 in the semifinals to reach the gold medal.
She was due to fight Sarah Ann Hildebrand of the United States for the gold medal but was disqualified for violating the weight limit. Earlier in the tournament, Phogat scored a crucial victory by defeating Tokyo 2020 champion Yui Susaki of Japan in the round of 16.
After she was disqualified from the women's 50 kg finals at the Olympics, Phogat pleaded with CAS to award her a silver medal. The result is expected by 9.30 pm IST.
Speaking to news agency ANI, Vidushpat said, “The hearing was held on August 9 and the verdict is expected by 9.30 pm tonight. Vinesh's side was presented by 4 lawyers. She is the applicant and United World Wrestling (UWW) and the International Olympic Committee are the respondents and the Indian Olympic Association is an interested party. We hope the decision will come in Vinesh's favour. Whatever the decision of CAS, she is a champion and should be respected as such.”

CAS has set up an ad hoc division headed by US president Michael Leonard to handle Olympic matters in Paris. This department operates in the 17th arrondissement of the Paris Judicial Court.
In an emotional post on 'X' announcing her retirement, Phogat expressed gratitude. “My kusti (wrestling) won against me, I lost. I'm sorry, I broke your dream and my courage. Now I have no more strength. Goodbye Wrestling 2001-2024. I will be forever grateful to all of you for the apology.”
During her illustrious career, Vinesh bagged two World Championship bronze medals (2019 and 2022), one Asian Games gold (2018) and bronze (2014), and three Commonwealth Games gold medals (2014, 2018, 2022). She won gold at the Asian Championships (2021) and silver and bronze at the continental level.
IOA president Dr PT Usha on Sunday clarified that weight management of athletes in wrestling, weightlifting, boxing and judo is the responsibility of each athlete and his coach, not the IOA-appointed Chief Medical Officer Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala. and his team.
Dr. Usha said that at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, every Indian athlete in such sports had their own support team. According to an IOA statement, these support teams have been working with athletes for years.
The IOA had appointed a medical team a few months back, primarily as a team that would help players in their recovery and injury management during and after the tournament. The team was designed to help athletes who do not have their own team of nutritionists and physiotherapists.
Dr. Usha said that the IOA medical team, especially Dr. The hatred directed at Pardiwala is unacceptable and deserves condemnation. She hoped that those rushing to judge the IOA medical team would consider all the facts before jumping to any conclusions.
