Trump may replace J.D. Vance with Nikki Haley as his vice president, claims former Clinton adviser
It is still technically possible for Trump to replace Vance. But the last time a candidate did something like that was in 1972, when Democratic nominee George McGovern dropped fellow Sen.
A former adviser to former President Bill Clinton has sparked speculation that former President Donald Trump will replace Senator JD Vance as his vice presidential pick for the 2024 election. Rumors of Trump regretting picking Vance have been rife, especially after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the presumptive Democratic nominee. While Trump has publicly said he is pleased with Vance, saying the senator is “doing a great job” and has been “very well received” by the public during an interview with Fox News on Thursday, concerns remain about whether the Ohio senator can make it. A liability for Republicans in November.
Paul Begala, a key figure in Clinton's 1992 campaign, hinted on CNN that Trump might choose former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley over Vance. Begala said during a panel discussion on Jake Tapper's interview with Haley that the former ambassador was “campaigning” for the VP slot and that Democrats had already set a “standard” by switching their ticket.
“There is zero chance that the Republicans will take their vice presidential candidate off the ticket,” Begala said. “He's an idiot. He is the first vice president of any party since 1980 to start underwater in his approval rating.”
“He's not good on the stumps,” he added. “I don't like Trump [but] He's really charismatic … Jedi, so far, is just boring. This is a woman [Haley] Campaign to get tickets, you see this year. You see.”
Begla pondered “what a different race we would have had” if Trump had chosen Haley over Vance, arguing that she would serve as a “bridge” to potential swing voters desired by both parties.
“Trump is not good with long relationships,” Begala concluded. “And he won't be there with the Jedi.”
