Clearing the IIT-JEE entrance exam, graduating from a prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and then landing a corporate job with a handsome salary, is usually the sum of dreams of almost every engineering aspirant in India. However, there are those whose aspirations go beyond their initial success, driving them to make tough choices to achieve their ultimate goals.
One such inspiring story is that of IPS Rohit Bansal, an IIT Delhi alumnus, who quit his 36 lakh salary job in the corporate sector to pursue his dream of UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) and cleared it after three failed attempts. (AIR) Test in 2022 with an effective All India Rank of 135.
Who is IPS Robin Bansal?
Born in a middle-class family in Lehragaga, Sangrur district of Punjab, Robin Bansal excelled in studies from an early age. After completing his schooling in his hometown, Robin cleared the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) and got admission in IIT Delhi where he completed his B.Tech degree in Computer Engineering.
Robin's father Vijay Bansal is a lecturer in economics, while mother Renu Bansal is a housewife. Notably, before Robin's UPSC success, his younger sister, Eliza Bansal, had appeared first in the AIIMS medical exam in 2018, topping the exam.
After graduating, Robin Bansal joined the prestigious Samsung R&D Institute India-Bangalore (SRI-B) for Rs. 36 lakhs/year (about Rs. 3 lakhs per month) and got a job with a good salary.

However, despite getting a high-paying job, Rohit's ultimate goal was always to enter the civil services sector and work for the public, and hence he took the tough decision to quit the corporate job after a year of stint and started preparing. For UPSC CSE.
But success was not easy for the son of Sangrur as he failed to clear the UPSC exam in his first three attempts from 2019-2021. Still, Rohit never lost faith in himself, persevered and prepared hard and finally cleared the country's toughest exam in 2022 in his fourth attempt, securing an AIR rank of 135.
Talking about his failures and eventual triumph, Rohit revealed that self-study was the key to his success in clearing UPSC CSE but also credited the role of coaching centers that helped him wrap his head around the ginormous syllabus and other supplementary reading. Robin Bansal opted for the Indian Police Service (IPS) cadre, and now an IPS officer, he has proudly served the people as he had dreamed of.
