During the show, when Karan was asked if he could predict the fate of his films at the box office in advance, the producer replied in Hindi, “I never thought that I would do this or that my film would be huge. Box office success. I feel like I'm going to lose and hit the streets because at the end of the day I'm a producer's son. My father was a production controller for 30 years and when he made his first film, he took a huge loan to make Dostana and the film ran. After that, he did many other films and they all flopped.”
Karan recounts a specific incident, “We were invited to the premiere but were given really low quality seats. So my father would not go, but he asked me to attend. I saw the question in his eyes that if he could not be respected, why was he invited? Failure is a bitter pill to swallow. When films flop, your failure is announced loudly and it becomes difficult for him to go through it.”
Karan added, “He would have been very happy to see where Dharma is today. I feel sad that he left us so soon after seeing my journey of only 5-6 years. My biggest regret is that he wasn't around when he was at his best.”
Yash Johar died of cancer at the age of 75. After Yash Johar's death, Karan took charge of Dharma Productions. Over the years, the production house has produced several hit films, including the recent release Bad News.
