Chicago: Kamala Harris has brought enormous energy as the Democratic presidential nominee, and the party is eager to use the Chicago convention to drive historic momentum behind the Harris-Walz ticket to defeat Republican Donald Trump, a top party leader said.

The once-in-four-year Democratic National Convention, which begins Monday, is being held this year in this windy town near Lake Michigan in the state of Illinois.

A roll call celebration of Vice President Harris and Gov. Tim Walz, the Democrat nominated as her running mate, is scheduled for Tuesday.

On Thursday, Harris, 59, will formally deliver her speech accepting the nomination as the Democratic Party's presidential nominee for the Nov. 5 election.

“Madam Vice President Kamala Harris has brought tremendous energy and enthusiasm to the presidential election as the nominee of the Democratic Party. She has brought a lot of young people and people from different backgrounds into this campaign,” Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison told PTI in an interview.

“They're really interested in her,” he said of Harris, who has Indian and African heritage.

“She's brought a lot of hope and joy to this election, which is very much needed, especially when you're running against someone like Donald Trump, who is going to be feared, who is going to divide the country, not bring us together,” Harrison said.

Harris is simply a “tremendous personality … she's running one of the most amazing campaigns I've ever seen.”

Incumbent President Joe Biden, 81, withdrew from the race for the White House last month and endorsed Harris for the position. She soon received the endorsement of former President Barack Obama and collected enough delegate votes to finalize the party's presidential nominee.

Harris has now become the first woman of color to top the presidential ticket of a major US political party.

She is the first Indian-American to be nominated as the presidential candidate of the Republican or Democratic Party. Harris' mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was Indian and her father, Donald Jasper Harris, Jamaican; Both immigrated to the US.

“I think you will get a lot of hope and joy from this platform,” said Harrison, who as chairman of the Democratic National Committee is responsible for making the convention a success. In short, all the stalwarts of the Democratic Party, those who have been anchors of the party for years and those who are new and rising stars in the party, will all be on stage.”

“Democrats across the country have made their voices heard in support of our Democratic candidates, and we look forward to using this convention to build historic momentum behind the Harris-Walz ticket as we unite in our goal to defeat Donald Trump,” he said.

More than 30,000 Democratic Party leaders and members across the country are expected to attend, with Biden, former President Obama and Bill Clinton among the key leaders expected to address the four-day convention.

“We're asking not just Indian Americans, but we're asking all Americans to go out and support Kamala Harris and Tim Waltz as they look to America's future and not just be a party to America's past,” Harrison said.

The Democratic National Convention is a formal event where Democrats from all 50 states and US territories will come together to rally behind Harris and Walz.

During Tuesday's roll call celebration, all 57 delegations will make comments and cast formal votes for Harris and Walz as the Democratic nominees for President and Vice President of the United States.

“Roll Call is a beloved and time-honored tradition, and we're proud to bring it back in a new and fun form,” said Harrison.

“The convention is more than a roll call ceremony — it's a celebration of everything the Democratic Party stands for: diversity, strength and unity,” said Minion Moore, chair of the Democratic National Convention.

“This year's roll call to elect Harris and Walz captures the growing momentum and energy across the country,” he said.
