Joe Biden emphasized that this kind of violence has no place in the country and urged Americans to refrain from making assumptions about the shooter's motives.
Washington: A day after the assassination attempt on Donald Trump, US President Joe Biden ordered an independent review of security measures at the Pennsylvania rally. In his comments from the White House on Sunday, Biden said, “I have directed an independent national security review of yesterday's rally to assess exactly what happened.” “And we will share the results of that independent review with the American people,” he added. Notably, Joe Biden's comments were his second public statement since the attack at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.
Joe Biden called for unity
Calling for unity following the attack on Donald Trump, US President Joe Biden stressed that such violence has no place in the country and urged Americans to refrain from making assumptions about the shooter's motives. He emphasized the importance of allowing the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to investigate them without interference.
“This kind of violence has no place in America,” the president reiterated. “I urge everyone … please don't make assumptions about his motives or affiliation,” Biden said, “let the FBI do their job and let their partner agencies do their job.”
Biden calls for review of US Secret Service measures
According to CNN, he directed the head of the US Secret Service to review security measures ahead of this week's Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. Biden also noted that he has tried to provide Trump with every Secret Service resource the former US president and his team have asked for.
“I have continued my direction of the Secret Service to provide him with every resource, capability and safeguard he needs to ensure his continued safety,” Biden said.
Biden was in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, when the shooting happened. He returned to the White House late Saturday and received an update from homeland security and law enforcement officials in the situation room Sunday morning.
Joe Biden condemns Trump's assassination attempt
In his remarks, Biden condemned the assassination attempt, saying, “This kind of violence, or any violence for that matter, has no place in America. An assassination attempt is against everything we stand for as a nation. everything. It is not who we are as a nation. It's not America. And we cannot allow this to happen,” according to CNN.
He emphasized that “unity is the most elusive goal of all, but nothing is more important right now: unity.”
Biden confirmed that he and Trump spoke by phone but did not disclose details of their conversation. He also added that First Lady Jill Biden and I were praying for the family of the man who was killed at the rally, and that I am deeply grateful that Trump is doing well and recovering.
