Lopez and Affleck rekindled their relationship in 2021, nearly 17 years after their first engagement ended in 2003. Known to fans as Bennifer, the couple officially ended their initial engagement in January 2004 but remained friendly for several years.
Their renewed romance went public in April 2021 following Lopez's split from former MLB star Alex Rodriguez. The couple made their relationship Instagram-official in July 2021 and were spotted together at the Venice Film Festival later that year. They announced their engagement in April 2022, leading to a surprise Las Vegas wedding, followed by a lavish celebration in Georgia, attended by celebrities such as Matt Damon, Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes, with podcaster and life coach Jay Shetty officiating.

Rumors of marital problems began to circulate in May when they repeatedly separated. Lopez was busy promoting the film and her upcoming tour, while Affleck stayed in Los Angeles to film The Accountant 2.
Their relationship became increasingly strained over the summer as Lopez spent time in the Hamptons and Affleck stayed in Los Angeles. In June, they listed their Beverly Hills mansion for sale, and Affleck bought a new $20 million home in July. According to People magazine, the couple had already stopped living together, with Lopez not seeing Affleck for several weeks until she filed for divorce.
