Hema Committee Report: Petitioners demand CBI inquiry into sexual harassment cases in Malayalam film industry.

Ever since the Hema Committee report became public, there has been a huge controversy in the Malayalam film industry. A petition was recently filed in the Kerala High Court, requesting the state government to hand over the investigation of all complaints received by women in the film industry to the CBI. The petition was filed by Jannath A and Amrita Premjith.

The petitioners argued that the state government had failed to present the report in the Assembly, raising concerns about its genuine commitment to women's safety. They say the state machinery is reluctant to register the crimes highlighted in the report, leading to a miscarriage of justice.

The individuals and victims who have made the allegations are from high profile backgrounds. This has led to fears that these people may be unfairly protected.

What is the Hema Committee Report?

On 20 August 2024, the Hema Committee's report was published, covering 200 pages, and highlighting the male dominance of the Malayalam film industry. The report revealed a network of 15 prominent figures, including directors, producers and actors, who were allegedly involved in sexual harassment cases.

According to the committee's findings, there is a group of men in the Malayalam industry who decide who gets cast in films. The report states, “The Malayalam film industry is dominated by a few producers, directors and actors—all men. They control the industry and dominate others in the film business.”
