Biden praised PM Modi for his humanitarian support to Ukraine
Biden and Modi reaffirmed their continued support for peaceful resolution of the conflict in accordance with international law based on the Charter of the United Nations.
US President Joe Biden held a phone conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and praised him for his “message of peace and ongoing humanitarian support” for Ukraine. The prime minister's visit to Kiev on August 23 was seen in many quarters as a diplomatic balancing act after his visit to Russia last month drew criticism from the Biden administration and angered some Western capitals.
During the visit, Modi told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that Ukraine and Russia should sit together to end the war and that India was ready to play an “active role” in restoring peace.
In a post without an 'X', Biden said, “I spoke with Prime Minister Modi to discuss his recent visit to Poland and Ukraine and appreciated his message of peace and ongoing humanitarian support for Ukraine.” “We reaffirmed our commitment to work together to contribute to peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific,” the US president said.
This was the first meeting between the two leaders after Modi's visit to Russia, Poland and Ukraine and the recent developments in Bangladesh.
The White House readout of the call said the two leaders discussed Modi's recent visits to Poland and Ukraine, as well as the United Nations General Assembly meetings in September.
“The President commended the Prime Minister for his historic visits to Poland and Ukraine, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in decades, and for his peace and ongoing humanitarian support to Ukraine, including its energy sector,” it said.
Biden and Modi reaffirmed their continued support for peaceful resolution of the conflict in accordance with international law based on the Charter of the United Nations.
“The leaders emphasized their continued commitment to working together with regional groups such as the Quad to contribute to peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific,” the White House said.
The White House readout of the call did not mention Bangladesh, which was mentioned by PM Modi in the 'X' post.
Earlier, in a post on the micro-blogging site, Prime Minister Modi said that in his call with Biden, he had a detailed exchange of views on various regional and global issues, including the situation in Ukraine. “I reiterated India's full support for the early return of peace and stability,” the Prime Minister said.
Moreover, Modi said he and Biden also discussed the current situation in Bangladesh and emphasized on restoring normalcy at the earliest and ensuring safety and security of minorities, especially Hindus.
Following the political developments in Bangladesh, India has been continuously pressing to ensure the safety and security of the country's minorities, especially the Hindus.
