Aman Sehrawat cut a lonely figure in the Indian wrestling camp as he is the only male wrestler from the country to qualify for the Paris Olympics 2024. The Indian grappler produced one of the Games' performances as he completely dominated former world champion Zelimkhan Abakarov, winning 12-0 with technical superiority.

In a single move at the start of the second round, Aman completely destroyed Abakarov, scoring 10 points with several roll-overs. The former champion was stunned and challenged the move to no avail as the Indian was declared the winner by a margin of 12-0 – his second straight technical superiority victory of the day.

Aman will now take on Japanese wrestler Rei Higuchi in the semi-finals and a win in the event will ensure India a wrestling medal at the Olympics. Higuchi is a 2016 Rio Olympic silver medalist and 2022 World Champion in the 61kg category and 2023 World Championship silver medalist in the 57kg category.

India will be hoping that Aman Sehrawat can continue her golden run on Olympic debut so far and book her place in the finals like Vinesh Phogat did before her disqualification.

Earlier, India's young grappler Sehrawat secured an easy quarter-final berth in the 57kg freestyle category with a dominant display against North Macedonia's Vladimir Egorov in the opening bout. The 21-year-old Indian, the Asian Championship gold medalist and the country's only male wrestler to qualify for the Paris Olympics, was superbly agile as he kept his defenses intact while routinely outmaneuvering his 29-year-old former European champion. Leg hold to win the bout by technical superiority (10-0).

Egorov looked a little troubled after the first round, requiring medical treatment on his knee after Sehrawat's all-out attack as the Indian raced to a 6-0 lead. But the Macedonian couldn't mount a comeback and with two minutes left on the clock, Aman scored a takedown for two more points and a 10-0 lead.

Anshu Malik lost in the pre-quarter finals

Meanwhile, another Indian grappler Anshu Malik showed great determination but could not break the defense of USA veteran Helen Louise Marolis, losing 2-7 in the 57 kg pre-quarter final. It was a rematch of the 2021 World Championship final in Oslo where Anshu had to settle for silver against the American.

2016 Rio Olympic gold medalist and Tokyo Games bronze medalist Helen reached the final while Anshu's bronze-medal hopes now depend on the repechage.
