Tamil Nadu Electricity Tariff: The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) has revised electricity tariffs for various segments of consumers in the southern state, state-run discom TANGEDCO said in a release on Monday. According to the release, the revised tariffs are part of measures to compensate the state-owned power distribution company for mounting financial losses over the years.

According to the revised tariff issued by the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO), the increase for domestic consumers is between Rs 5 and Rs 40 for various categories.

A Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) release said that as per the revised tariff, there is an increase of Rs 5 to Rs 40 for domestic consumers for various categories.

  • Free electricity up to 100 units for all domestic consumers and subsidies including handlooms, agriculture and places of worship will continue.
  • For 63 lakh domestic consumers who use up to 200 units for two months, there will be a maximum increase of Rs 5 per month, it said.
  • The new tariff will be a maximum of Rs 15 per month for 3.5 lakh household users using up to 300 units for two months.
  • The revised rate for domestic customers consuming 400 units and 500 units for two months will be Rs 25 and Rs 40 per month respectively.
  • For low and high transmission industries, the rate was revised by 35 paise per unit.

Opposition parties, including Pattali Makkal Katchi and Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam, have opposed the rate revision, though TANGEDCO termed it as a minor revision.
