Wayanad: Kerala General Education and Labor Minister V Shivankutty said on Tuesday that classes will soon resume in schools in landslide-hit Wayanad that are now being used as relief camps and financial assistance will be given to workers affected by the disaster.

Shivankutty said many schools are functioning as relief camps and after meeting with teachers, PTA and other stakeholders, it was decided to start classes in 10-20 days. All basic facilities in the schools will be improved before the start of classes.

This is in line with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's directives to ensure that the education of children in landslide-hit areas is not affected or disrupted in any way. The Minister further said that the Labor Board has decided to provide financial assistance to the laborers injured in the landslide and the relatives of the workers who died in the disaster.

Migrant workers will also be given financial assistance along with their treatment. Shivankutty said that the families of the laborers who died in the landslide will be given Rs 1 lakh as the first installment.

The death toll from Monday's landslides has reached 226. Search and rescue operations are underway in the landslide affected areas.
