New UK PM Starmer Appoints Cabinet; Rachel Reeves Named Country's First Female Chancellor

London: Keir Starmer became the new Prime Minister of the UK, on Friday and vowed to rebuild Britain, hours after his Labour Party secured a landslide victory in a general election. The new UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, has formed his cabinet, naming Angela Rayner as the Deputy Prime Minister and appointing Rachel Reeves as the country’s first female Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Starmer’s cabinet featured a historic inclusion of 11 women out of a total team of 25 members. Starmer, 61, assumed charge as the 58th prime minister after his customary audience with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace, following Sunak’s meeting with the British monarch. Yvette Cooper has been appointed Home Secretary, David Lammy was named Foreign Secretary, and John Healey was appointed Defence Secretary.

Additional appointments comprise Shabana Mahmood as Justice Secretary, Wes Streeting as Health Secretary, Bridget Phillipson as Education Secretary, and Ed Miliband as Energy Secretary.

After Keir Starmer was elected as the United Kingdom’s new Prime Minister on Friday, he delivered his first speech outside 10, Downing Street, pledging to get the country’s “struggling” healthcare system back on track, secure British borders, and attend to the need for schools and affordable homes. “Our country has voted decisively for change and a return of politics to public service,” he said.

Sharing a post on X,  New UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer wrote,” My government will serve you. Politics can be a force for good. The work of change begins today.”
