Silverstone (England): Lewis Hamilton held off a late charge from Max Verstappen to win a thrilling British Grand Prix on Sunday and secure his first victory since the final race of the 2021 season. Hamilton became the first F1 driver to win nine times at any track and extended his F1 record to 104 wins. His last appearance came at the Saudi Arabian GP in December 2021 – the year he lost the title to Red Bull driver Verstappen.

The seven-time F1 champion beat defending champion Verstappen by 1.5 seconds, with Lando Norris finishing third for McLaren ahead of team-mate Oscar Piastre. A tearful Hamilton thanked his team over the radio and became emotional minutes later as he struggled to compose himself.

“I'm still crying,” Hamilton said as he addressed the crowd. “2021 and here have definitely been days when I didn't think I was good enough.” There were high hopes of a home victory at Silverstone, with Hamilton's Mercedes team-mate George Russell in pole position ahead of Hamilton with Norris third and Verstappen fourth.

On lap 34 of 52, Russell's hopes of a second consecutive F1 victory were ended by a water problem in his car. Shortly after, McLaren changed Norris' tire. Verstappen overtook Norris with four laps remaining but was unable to catch Hamilton, much to the delight of most of the 164,000 fans who attended the race.

Moments after crossing the line, Hamilton jumped into the arms of the mechanics and then shared a long hug with his father. Then it was time for a standing ovation from the home fans. Carrying a British flag, he jumped over the crash barrier and then held it aloft.

“I can see you sitting on the lap, there's no greater feeling,” he told the cheering crowd. At the start, Russell and Hamilton went clear while Verstappen overtook Norris. Rain began to fall about 25 minutes into the race and the 5.9-kilometer (3.7-mile) track became more slippery.

After Hamilton took the lead from Russell on the wet track, Norris took advantage of Russell's mistake to move into second place. Verstappen, Norris and both Mercedes cars put on new tires shortly after the halfway point of the race. But McLaren held off Piastre for a little longer, finally giving him a chance at victory.

After a tyre-change shakeup, Norris was just three seconds ahead of Hamilton while Verstappen was trailing at this point. The next tire change, with little more than 10 laps remaining, proved crucial.

Verstappen, Hamilton and Norris made quick changes but McLaren took up too much time on the back of Norris – 4.5 seconds – and he fell 2.4 seconds behind race leader Hamilton, now Verstappen quickly dropped down the field. He couldn't get close enough, and Hamilton's wins made it six different winners so far this season – compared to just three in 22 races last year.

Carlos Sainz Jr finished fifth for Ferrari ahead of Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg, with Lance Stroll (Aston Martin), Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), Alex Albon (Williams) and Yuki Tsunoda (RB) rounding out the top 10. Sergio Perez apologized. To Red Bull after qualifying in a disappointing 19th, and his team started in pit lane as they made several changes. He finished 17th. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc started 11th and finished 14th.
