Jai Shah will contest the election of ICC president? BCCI secretary keen on changes to International Cricket Council: Report
Indian cricket has been transformed under the guidance of Jai Shah.
New Delhi: According to reports, Jay Shah may step down as honorary secretary in the BCCI for the International Cricket Council (ICC) presidential election to be held in November later this year. The ICC is currently headed by incumbent Greg Barkley for four years and is eligible for another term. But if Shah decides to throw his hat in the election, he will be elected unopposed. If Shah wins the election, he will become the youngest ICC president.
The next ICC annual conference is in Colombo later this month and if the report is to go ahead, the dates for the next president's election could be discussed at the meeting. However, there was no response from Shah in this regard. According to reports, Shah wants to bring about some changes in the way the ICC operates, especially after the recent controversy over the hosting of the T20 World Cup 2024 between the USA and the West Indies.
Meanwhile, the ICC has also amended its constitution regarding the tenure of the president. A newly elected president can serve for three years, as opposed to the previous two years. He can be elected once instead of being elected twice earlier. Shah has been associated with cricket administration since 2009. Before joining the BCCI in 2015, he served as the secretary of the Gujarat Cricket Association. He was appointed as BCCI Secretary in 2019.
After India won the 2024 T20 World Cup, Shah had announced a price tag of Rs 125 crore for players and support staff. “I am happy to announce the prize money of INR 125 crores for Team India for winning the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024. The team has displayed exceptional talent, determination and sportsmanship throughout the tournament. Congratulations to all players, coaches and support staff for this outstanding performance!”
