New Delhi: Former South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn hailed Gautam Gambhir's appointment as India's head coach and said his aggression on the field and awareness of the game will be beneficial for the Men in Blue.

After the departure of Rahul Dravid, BCCI announced Gambhir as the head coach of the Indian team. India won the T20 World Cup in its last assignment, ending an 11-year ICC trophy drought.

“I am a huge fan of Gautam Gambhir. I like his aggressiveness. He's one of the few Indians I've played against who comes back at you and I love that. I think he will take it to the dressing room with Virat and some other senior players who may not play a big role anymore. I'm not sure,” Steyn told Star Sports.

“Not just in India, but in world cricket we need guys who are a bit more aggressive and play a bit harder. We all seem to play against each other in leagues and we become very friendly and friendly. I love that he is fierce on the field but a gentleman off the field. He is also in the lane, very smart cricketer and has a good cricket brain. So I think from that point of view, it will be fantastic for them as well,” he added.

Former Proteas all-rounder Jacques Kallis also believes in Gambhir's ability to excel in the job with his aggressive nature.

“It's great to see Gautam getting into the coaching side of things. He has a very good cricket brain. He will bring some fire and likes to play the game aggressively. I think he will bring that added touch and kids will definitely learn a lot from him. He has a lot to add and will be crucial for that Indian team. I wish him the best—not much against us, but I'm sure he'll do great,” Kallis said.

Former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi added, “I think it's a big opportunity and we need to see how he takes advantage of it. I have seen his interviews and he speaks positively and is very straightforward.”

Gambhir will join the Indian squad for the tour of Sri Lanka, where India will play three T20Is and several ODIs against Sri Lanka from July 27.
