New Delhi: July 19 (IANS) Former Delhi Capitals assistant coach Mohammad Kaif feels that Sourav Ganguly would do a “good job” if appointed as head coach of the Indian Premier League franchise following the departure of Ricky Ponting.
Ganguly is one of the contenders to take over the role, as he is currently associated with the franchise as the Director of Cricket. In the last edition of the IPL, Delhi Capitals failed to make it to the playoffs, finishing sixth in the league stage.
Kaif, who has been with the team for three years as assistant head coach, pointed out that the team does not back their players in the tournament which is the main reason for their disappointing campaign in the tournament so far.
“Delhi Capitals rotate their players a lot. As new players come and go, they have Mandeep Singh, Sarfraz, Mustafizur Rahman, Riley Rosso and Ripple Patel who they are preparing him for. But they don't follow their template of building a youth team as they move on from that and bring in senior players. They don't back their players and keep changing players,” Kaif told IANS.
“I think Sourav Ganguly will do well if he takes over as the head coach of Delhi Capitals. He has experience, and also has a mega auction coming up, so he will make a good team. Delhi had players but their difficulty was inconsistent in playing 11.
“I don't think they have any problem with the players, they have quality players but they lacked in backing their players somehow,” he added.
Asked why he changes his players so much and if there is any pressure from the team management, Kaif replied, “Captains like Rohit Sharma and Ricky Ponting shouldn't have a problem from the management. He is a veteran and should know how to run a team. The challenge comes when you lose 2-3 matches and then the management gets involved and asks 'why are you losing?' When management asks what is going on, this is where the puzzle goes wrong and the pressure builds.”
“Delhi made tactical mistakes in the last few matches and missed out on (play-off) qualification,” he added.
Asked about his next coaching stint in the IPL, Kaif said, “He would like to stay on the ground and connect with like-minded people”, without naming any names.
