Washington: Soon after Joe Biden announced his decision to end his re-election bid, Republican candidate Donald Trump said the incumbent president is “not fit to run” and “certainly not fit to serve.” He also said that Biden “gained the presidency with nothing but lies and fake news.”

“Crooked Joe Biden was not fit to run for President and is certainly not fit to serve – and never has been! He won the presidency with lies, fake news, and has not left his basement, Trump said in a statement posted on his Truth social network.

Trump, 78, added, “Everyone around him, including his doctors and the media, knew he wasn't fit to be president and he wasn't — and now, look at what he's done to our country, along with millions of people. Record numbers of people coming across our borders, completely unchecked and unvetted, from prisons, mental institutions and extremists. His presidency will hurt us a lot, but we will quickly make up for the damage he has done. Make America Great Again!”

Trump's statement came after Biden announced his decision not to seek re-election in the “best interests” of the Democratic Party and the country. He said he would speak to the country in more detail later this week.

Biden announced his withdrawal from the race to become the next president following mounting pressure from Democrats following his inconsistent performance in a nationally televised 90-minute debate with Trump on June 27.

In a letter posted on X, Biden said, “And while I intend to seek re-election, I believe I am in the best interest of my party and the country, and I am fully focused on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my term.” I will speak to the nation in more detail about my decision later this week.”

Biden has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential nominee and called on Democrats to “come together and defeat” Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

He said the U.S. is one of the world's strongest economies and has made historic investments to rebuild the nation, lower prescription drug costs for seniors and expand affordable health care to a record number of Americans.
